The Superintendent’s Family Action Committee will:
- Hold the district accountable for progress on goals outlined in the strategic plan. District staff will report out on specific metrics each time the FAC meets.
- Provide the superintendent and staff with input on strategies for meeting the strategic goals.
- Participate in sub-committees that will focus on various topics including but not limited to Common Core, Family Engagement, School Safety, Language Learning etc.
The committee will be composed of up to 40 parents, guardians, and/or family members. To ensure the committee reflects the diverse population of Highline Public Schools, we will recruit family members who represent those who have traditionally been less involved in schools, including diversity in:
Committee Member Qualifications
- Sexual orientation
- Socio-economic status
- Type of family (single parent, foster care, kinship)
- Geographic locations (at least one rep from each service area)
- Student programs (general education, inclusive education, ELL, highly capable, alternative, homeless, Native American Ed, etc.)
- School level (at least one representative from each school level, preschool, elementary, middle and high)
Must be a parent, family member or guardian of a Highline Public Schools student.
Committee Member Expectations
- Value and respect the diversity of Highline Public Schools.
- Work cooperatively and respectfully with committee members.
- Actively participate in Committee tasks.
Term of Committee and Length of Term
The Family Action Committee is a standing committee. The term of membership is two years. Members will serve from August 2016-August 2018.
Committee Support & Structure
The Family Action Committee members are appointed by the Superintendent. The Executive Director of Student Support & Family Engagement will be the Superintendent’s representative for the committee. Committee members will be offered training in leadership, advocacy, parent engagement best practices, teambuilding and other pertinent topics identified by the group so that those who have typically not been involved in District and school-level committees will develop the skills to be effective team members and advocates.
Meetings will be held quarterly. Locations may rotate to schools across the district. Subcommittee meetings will be held in addition to quarterly meetings. A meal, child care, and interpretation will be provided, as necessary to facilitate the full participation of all committee members.
Committee Member Responsibilities and Commitment
Committee members are expected to commit to attending initial orientation/training and all advisory committee meetings. (Exceptions will be made for urgent and unforeseen conflicts.) The estimated time commitment is up to 6 hours per month, including meeting time.
Nomination/Appointment Process Nominations
for the committee will be sought via public notices, community partners, school staff, and parent groups. Calls for nominations will sent out via website, school newsletters, bilingual family liaisons, flyers, email lists, etc. Nominations will be submitted to the Superintendent, who will be the final appointing authority.
Nominations will be accepted through Friday, May 6, 2016. A letter acknowledging nomination will be sent to all prospective committee members after nominations close.
